Free Image Manipulation Program – GIMP
GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.
GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.
GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OSX.
GIMP is one of the more popular image manipulation programs out there, and for good reason. It is an extremely powerful open-source program that can do most things that the top image programs can do for free. Also, because it is open-source there are constantly add-ons and plug-ins being made to make the program much more powerful and versatile.
The ease of use (especially if you are familiar with image editing programs such as photoshop) is seamless. If you are familiar with photoshop you will most likely be able to jump right in using the same shortcut keys and tools.
If you are a fan, be sure to donate what you can to ensure the continued development of this program!
